Calls for Starmer to resign over Mandelson vetting scandal

  • Leaders from a number of the UK’s major political parties have called on Sir Keir Starmer to resign after it emerged that Lord Peter Mandelson failed the vetting process for the US ambassador role, but was still given the job.
  • Sir Keir has previously insisted due process was followed in the appointment, and that Lord Mandelson had lied about the extent of his links with paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.
  • Sir Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, said Sir Keir must resign if he “misled Parliament and lied to the British public” over the issue, adding , “we’re seeing the same old sleaze, scandal and cover-ups as we did under the Conservatives”.
  • The Green Party called for Sir Keir Starmer to resign also, with Sian Berry saying Starmer has “lied and lied again” over the situation. “No more buck passing, no more mysteriously vanishing mobile phones, the public need the truth,” she added.
  • Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch said the prime minister “is definitely in resigning territory” and called on the Labour Party to act. She added: “Labour MPs now need to ask themselves, are we prepared to keep this man who has lied and lied again in Downing Street?”
