Calls for social distancing measures to be removed from seaside town

Community leaders are pressing for council chiefs to reverse their decision to close off Portishead seafront.

Portishead Town Council is to formally request North Somerset Council re-opens Esplanade Road as soon as possible.

Authority chiefs closed off the esplanade – along with all its parking spaces – earlier this summer to help with social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic.

Bollards and barriers were put up at both entrances to stop people using the road.

But the move has caused concern among some local residents who say the closure has caused congestion due to people parking around Lake Road.

Others have complained that motorists are parking in side roads around the Lake Grounds.

The Lake Grounds - described as the 'jewel in North Somerset's crown' - is popular with residents and visitors.

Many people come to enjoy picnics while others come to feed the ducks and spend time on and around the lake, park area or seafront.

A Portishead Town Council spokesman said: “The community matters committee agreed to send a formal request to North Somerset Council to ask for the re-opening of Esplanade Road as soon as possible,.

“This reflects the majority view of the feedback that has been received from residents that the closure is no longer effectively serving the original social distancing purpose and may infact be worsening the social distancing situation due to the congestion caused in the area.”

North Somerset Council announced last week that it is intention to keep Esplanade Road traffic free following a review of social distancing measures across the district.

However there will be some tweaks to the scheme with additional disabled parking put in place.

Additional disabled parking spaces will be added facing the sea next to the temporary barriers at the Lake Road/Esplanade Road Junction nearest to Beach Road West

Extra disabled spaces will also be installed near to the temporary barriers at the Lake Road/Esplanade junction by the lido.

Yellow lining will be installed by the corner of Lake Road/Beach Road West to stop traffic congestion in the area.

An exit sign will be installed at the west end of the Esplanade to deter people from turning around

The Kilkenny Fields and Lido car parking will be signposted.

North Somerset Council said the closure will remain in place ‘for the time being.’
