Calls for Scottish Government to support workers at Fishers laundry

Perthshire politicians have called on the Scottish Government to support workers at Fishers laundry in Perth facing redundancy.

At the Perth site of Fishers Services Ltd, 84 laundry employees have their future unknown after the site announced plans to shut for good last week and entered into a 30-day consultation process.

Reopening plans for Perth and Kinross recycling centres could ease fly-tipping crisis

Perth and North Perthshire MP Pete Wishart, whose constituency covers the Fishers site, said: “Reports of job losses are never welcome at any time, but are particularly worrying during a time of national crisis.

“Whilst the owners of the laundry are exploring options to keep the plant active, the operating environment is extremely challenging and it is prudent that the Scottish Government is ready and able to help people find alternative employment should the worst happen.”

John Swinney, MSP for Perthshire North added: “This is clearly a difficult time for everyone, and my thoughts are with those who have lost their jobs.

“It is important that all appropriate assistance is given to these staff members, particularly during such an unprecedented crisis.”
