Calls for Saudi Arabian leader's arrest if he arrives in Scotland for Cop26

Calls have been made for Saudi Arabian leader Prince Mohammed Bin Salman to be charged with murder if he arrives in Scotland for the Cop26 summit.

Human rights campaigners wrote to Police Scotland Chief Constable Iain Livingstone with the request last week.

They believe his officers have the power to arrest the prince for alleged involvement in the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

A group of Saudi security officials are said to be responsible for his death in the country’s consulate in Istanbul in October 2018.

It’s claimed his death was sanctioned by Bin Salman after Khashoggi wrote articles critical of the leader.

Campaigner Sean Clerkin, of Barrhead, near Glasgow, said: “I have asked Police Scotland to start a formal criminal investigation into the murder of Jamal Khashoggi. The above can be done through the principle of universal jurisdiction when Bin Salman arrives in
Glasgow for Cop26.

“It allows courts in overseas countries to address international crimes and hold perpetrators criminally liable.”

Naomi McAuliffe, of Amnesty International, said: “The closed-door trial of Jamal Khashoggi’s alleged killers was widely perceived to be a part of a wider whitewash by authorities.”

Police said: “We received correspondence from Mr Clerkin and will respond to him.”
