Calls for redress scheme to be open to all survivors of Mother and Baby homes

South Dublin councillors have agreed to write a letter to the government calling for an immediate review of the of the Mother and Baby Redress scheme to "give survivors peace".

The motion was proposed by Clondalkin Cllr Francis Timmons at Monday's monthly meeting of the council.

Cllr Timmons said that survivors of the mother and baby homes were very upset over the recent report into the homes which had not given survivors a right of reply.

He said: "In 2021 we got the commission of Inquiry report. Many survivors had waited a lifetime to tell their story, to be listened to and to be believed.

"It was for many a time for truth and justice, instead for many it caused huge upset and relived trauma for many of the horrors of the Institutions.

Cllr Timmons said that the report "held no one to account and more or less ignored the vaccine trials".

Cllr Timmon's motion was supported by many of his fellow councillors.

Cllr Patrick Pearse Holohan said that much more needs to be done to make the report more transparent.

He said: "Hundreds of people have gone unheard, this country needs to go further and there needs to be more transparency."

Meanwhile, Cllr Alan Edge praised Cllr Timmons for being "a tireless champion" who has spoken on behalf of many survivors.

The motion was ultimately passed by the council.

Speaking after the meeting, Cllr Timmons said that he was pleased by the support from his fellow councillors.

"In my motion that a lot of councillors spoke on and was unanimously passed I am basically saying to the Minister and the government to stop, stop hurting survivors, stop dividing and start the healing process. Give survivors some peace.

"The only decent and honest thing to do is to open any redress scheme to all survivors."
