Calls for prison probe after error sees inmates released by mistake

An inmate who had previously gone on the run was released from a high-security prison by mistake, it has emerged.

The gaffe happened at privately run Kilmarnock jail in November 2017.

In another case, a knife thug was released in error from Loss Moss Prison in
Bishopbriggs, near Glasgow.

Figures show that 10 inmates were wrongly released by the Scottish Prison Service (SPS) over the three years to last January.

Man rented flats and raked in thousands sub-letting flats to prostitutes

Of those, two came from Kilmarnock jail and two from Low Moss.

Scottish Tory justice spokesman Liam Kerr said: “These are very worrying mistakes and must be investigated further to protect the public. Prisons have a duty to keep dangerous criminals behind bars to serve their sentences.”

An SPS spokesman said: “Every year, approximately 10,000 convicted prisoners are released from custody.

“Whilst we are never complacent, the statistics show these errors
represent a very small proportion.”
