Calls for Prince Philip’s will to be released amid fears his fortune will stay secret

A peer has reportedly demanded the release of Prince Philip's will amid fears details of his personal fortune could remain secret.

The Duke of Edinburgh is said to have left behind an estimated £30million when he passed away aged 99 last month.

Experts are worried that the Palace and judges who rule on wills could choose to keep the document private.

Labour peer Lord Berkeley has now asked the Government if the Duke's will is due to be published, according to The Sun.

Justice minister Lord Wolfson reportedly said representatives of a deceased person can apply for a will to be kept private if it would be 'undesirable or otherwise inappropriate' for it to be made public.

Royal expert David McClure told The Sun: "If it’s good enough for all citizens why shouldn’t it be good enough for the Royal Family?”

“The reason you have testamentary transparency is to guard against fraud.

"It is a universal principal as fraud can go on in estates."

Sources previously said Prince Philip's beloved ponies and his funeral carriage will be inherited by his granddaughter.

They were left to 17-year-old Lady Louise because she shared his love of carriage driving.

The Duke of Edinburgh took up carriage driving in the 1970s, after switching from polo, and he taught the sport to his granddaughter and her mother, the Countess of Wessex

Sources close to the Royal Family told the MailOnline she will regularly exercise the two black ponies – Balmoral Nevis and Notlaw Storm – at Windsor.

Buckingham Palace has been approached for comment.
