Calls for plaque to honour women who served at Alexandria WWII training base

A bid is being made to install a plaque to commemorate the women who served at HMS Tullichewan.

Councillor Jim Bollan is calling on councillors to support his idea.

Tullichewan Castle and some of its adjoining land was taken over by the government during the Second World War to assist the war effort.

It became a training base for The Women’s Royal Naval Service.

Many of the ‘Wrens’ were local women and some subsequently transferred to Bletchley Park, the famous decoding centre in England.

In all, there were about 1500 Wrens involved in this most secret and arduous work and many of them had done their basic Wren training at Tullichewan.

Councillor Bollan is calling on West Dunbartonshire Council to install a suitable plaque in an appropriate location and says the costs are estimated to be up to £2000 which could come from the cultural budget or unearmarked reserves.

He will make his case for it at a full council meeting today (Wednesday), which will take place online.

According the the Vale of Leven History Project, the Wrens moved into the castle in 1943 and were there until the end of 1944.

It is reckoned that as many as 650 Wrens were accommodated there at the peak time.
