Calls for plaque to be installed on city centre street made famous by 'Creation of Manchester' New Year's Eve photo

Calls have been made for a plaque to be installed on a Manchester city centre street made famous by a New Year’s Day photo.

The photograph, which has been compared to Renaissance Art, was snapped on Well Street in 2016.

Photographer Joel Goodman captured the chaotic scene in the early hours of the morning.

It showed Mike Deveney sprawled in the street reaching for his bottle of lager while police grappled with another reveller.

Lauded for its inspired composition, the image was compared to various pieces of historic art, including Michelangelo’s The Creation of Adam.

Thus, 'The Creation of Manchester' cemented its place in the city's recent history.

Now, there have been calls on social media to install a plaque at the iconic spot

.

Twitter user Si Lloyd posted a photo of the street on September 13, saying: “One of the most famous parts of town. Still no plaque.”

Another said: “Deserves a statue.”

“Still no knighthood for @pixel8foto either!,” another tweeted.

Another said: “Haha I didn’t know it happened there. Biblical.”

Manchester City Council councillor Pat Karney said: “Joel is a genius at capturing our city in all its glory.

“I suspect he will have many more masterpieces to so it would be daft to follow him around with plaques.

“He is a great guy so I will buy him a pint in that area.”
