Calls for parking permits to be introduced on 'nightmare' street in The Meadows

Residents have made calls for parking permits to be introduced to a busy road in The Meadows that can get "swamped" by commuters and football fans.

There are a number of parking permits already in place around The Meadows but residents want to see the same done in Wilford Crescent West to help curb the issue.

Nottingham Forest fans often park on the street at weekends and then walk to the City Ground for matches, according to locals.

They say commuters also choose to park on the road during the week and either tram or walk into the city to avoid paying parking fees.

Residents in the area are concerned at the issue "getting worse" and that they sometimes cannot park outside where they live.

John Bradbury, 39, of The Meadows said: "It gets really bad on match days and often during the working week.

"I can come back from a school run and find it impossible to park near my house. I would say it is getting worse but I'm not sure why.

"People don't want to pay for parking in the city so it impacts us here. I think a permit here would make sense. They are already in lots of places in The Meadows."

Jess Needham, 28, of The Meadows, added: "It was crazy the last time Forest were at home. So many cars were parked up that you never see normally.

"It basically turns the road (Meadows Way West) into a one-way street because cars are parked either side.

"I was really worried I might clip one it was that busy and you're stuck if another car is trying to get through at the same time. It's a bit of a nightmare."

Sharon Abigale, 55, who lives just off Wilford Crescent West, added: "I will definitely make a call for a permit. I think it is needed. It works elsewhere. We shouldn't have to put up with commuters choosing here.

"The streets are tight enough as it is with residents parking up - we get swamped.

"I have parked hundreds of meters from my home before."

A Nottingham City Council said it would consider the residents' concerns.

A spokesperson said: “There are currently residents’ permits in certain sections of The Meadows, but these have not been installed everywhere because, historically, not everybody wanted them.

“If there is increased demand we can investigate further, subject to support from local ward councillors whose area funding pays for the schemes. Residents who are interested can email traffic.management@nottinghamcity.gov.uk for more information.”
