Calls for more seating in Dublin city centre after Clarendon Street transformation impresses public

A new public seating area in Dublin city centre has been highly praised with many encouraging the council to create similar spaces in public places.

Clarendon Street has been absolutely transformed as part of the improvement scheme that was planned for the area.

As part of the scheme, new benches were installed on the street recently following an extensive refurbishment last year.

Improvements included the excavation, reconstruction, milling and reconstruction of the asphalt carriageway and the repaving of the footpaths with new granite slabs.

Sharing images of the new benches, Dublin City Council said: "Our new benches have just been installed on Clarendon St. These are the finishing touches for our Clarendon St Improvement scheme, which was completely designed & managed in-house by our Road Design & Construction division alongside City Architects & Dublin City Council Parks and Biodiversity."

One person said: "Great to see new benches in the city. My parents always cite lack of seating as a reason not to venture into town. Looking forward to seeing this quality of street furniture throughout the city."

While another added: "They look wonderful, I love the design. It’s lovely to see something contemporary. I love the combination of granite, wood and metal."

One observer said that there are "far few" of similar style seating areas in the city centre.

They said: "Far too few of these in strategic places, for the elderly, pregnant people in need of a quick phew and should be strongly signed for able people to give them up if the need arises."
