Calls for Lowland League to be suspended amid Covid lockdown as Juniors put their campaign on hold

Lowland League bosses are being urged to suspend the season amid growing concern over Covid.

Dalbeattie Star have written to league chiefs asking for the campaign - which is approaching the half way stage - to be shelved until the spike in the virus is under control.

One other unnamed club has also voiced concern and the request is to be discussed at a board meeting planned for Monday.

It follows decisions by the East and North Region Junior Leagues to call a halt temporarily to their seasons.

The two junior associations have suspended all games, training and friendlies until February 6 while the South of Scotland League - tier 6 of the pyramid - will hold an EGM next week over closing down “until the Dumfries and Galloway Authority area is removed from the current "Lockdown" restrictions”.

The leagues were all granted “elite professional status” in line with the SPFL this season and the Lowland League is expected to continue undeterred.

But in a statement Dalbeattie said: “Despite the fact that we have followed all protocols and hopefully have been providing a COVID safe space, the rising number of cases in Dumfries and Galloway means we are very concerned that bringing players and staff to Dalbeattie for training is an unnecessary risk to our local community at this difficult time for everyone.

“We are classed as elite professional players but no provision is available for covid testing at our level, we do however query the professional status as we are a part time club and all players have other careers out with football.

“We as a club have today written to the Scottish Lowland Football League requesting that consideration be given to suspend the league till this terrible disease is under control again.

“Whilst we fully appreciate that we’re all in football for the love of the game we believe it’s a distant second right now to the safety of everyone in Dumfries and Galloway and beyond and therefore we hope you’ll understand our thoughts and concerns at this moment in time as we look to protect each and every individual.”
