Calls for Katie Taylor to be given official homecoming regardless of result in Madison Square Garden

Katie Taylor must be given an official homecoming win, lose, or draw, as she's "owed Ireland's gratitude", according to a North Dublin Councillor.

The IBF/WBO/WBA Champion is going head-to-head with Belguim's Delfine Persoon in Madison Square Garden this weekend with unification of her entire division on the line.

The 32-year-old's New York fight is set to be biggest of her career - and should she win she'd only be the seventh fighter to ever become an undisputed world champion.

Win, lose, or draw, there has been strong public support to give the Bray native an official state homecoming.

Dublin Live contacted the Department of Sport, Department of the Taoiseach, Wicklow County Council, Sport Ireland, Dublin City Council, and IABA to ask if arrangements were in place - but as of yet it's not clear that anyone is organising one.

North Inner City Councillor Christy Burke has urged the government to mark an event officially, saying the Wicklow native needs to be honoured at a national level.

He told Dublin Live: "We've been given no indication of one [a homecoming]. This shouldn't be a case of 'let the local area do it'. When the boxers win stuff here it's Dublin City Council organising it, when Katie wins it's Wicklow.

"She's a national figure, it should be the Taoiseach's office.

"Without the shadow of a doubt, win or lose, she has to have a national homecoming.

"She's Irish, she's a great ambassador, she was a leader in bringing women into sport - and not just boxing.

"She gave young kids great confidence and boosts with her wins over the years.

"The country owes it to Katie Taylor, the government owes it to Katie Taylor, and the least they could do win, lose, or draw, is give her a homecoming from the ministers.

"Katie is owed the gratitude, we're honoured to have such a gift of a person in sport out there on our behalf. And all of the top ministers need to be out there meeting her."

Burke's calls come just a few months after Kellie Harrington was given a raucous greeting on Sean MacDermott St - an event Sports Minster Shane Ross did not attend.

Lord Mayor Nial Ring criticised the minister who had not even acknowledged Harrington's achievement despite attending the Women's Hockey team's homecoming, both All-Ireland men's finals, and Ireland's historic rugby test win over New Zealand.

He said on the night: "One thing I have to say, where is the Minister for Sport tonight?

“He was there for the hockey women, he was there for the Dubs, why is he not here when we have a world champion in this area?”
