Calls for historic Markievicz Cottage in Dublin Mountains to be declared a National Monument

Calls have been made for a historic cottage in the Dublin Mountains to be declared a National Monument.

Markievicz Cottage, just off the Blackglen Road in Ticknock, was originally owned by the revolutionary leader and her husband Count Casimir Markievicz.

Many of those who took part or died in the 1916 Rising in Dublin, including some of the executed leaders, stayed in the house on occasion.

The cottage has fallen into disrepair but Glencullen/Sandyford Sinn Féin representative Shaun Tracey has written to Minister for Culture Catherine Martin asking her Department to at options to save its remains and declare the site a National Monument due to its historical significance.

He said: "Markievicz Cottage is of huge national historic significance. It was here that Countess Markievicz trained Na Fianna Éireann and many of the leaders of the 1916 Rising visited and met at this cottage.

"It is a crying shame that it has been allowed to fall into a state of ruin.

"I have today written to Minister Martin, having already written to previous Minister Josepha Madigan, and also to Councillor Sean McLoughlin of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Memorials Committee, to ask them to begin to explore options to save the remains of this cottage.

"As a first step I believe that the cottage should be put on the list of protected structures and declared a National Monument."

Councillor Lettie McCarthy is set to bring a motion before Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council on the issue next week.

Mr Tracey called on all councillors to support the proposal.
