Calls for face mask rules to return as Covid cases rise

The government has been urged to make mask wearing mandatory again as Coronavirus cases in the UK continue to rise.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson lifted all Coronavirus restrictions in England, including mask wearing, on July 19.

However with cases on the rise across the UK, some believe it is time to be placed back into some restrictions to help slow the spread.

Masks could be brought back in under 'Plan B' restrictions and scientists advising the government's coronavirus response have urged for these measures to be deployed 'rapidly' sorry.

Sage said the “reintroduction of working-from-home guidance is likely to have the greatest individual impact on transmission out of the proposed measures” in Plan B, which also includes the mandatory use of face masks.

The group also advised that “policy work on the potential reintroduction of measures should be undertaken now so that it can be ready for rapid deployment”.

Other measures that could be brought in under Plan B include introducing strict vaccine-only entry conditions for some venues and events.

There could also be communication to the public that the level of risk has increased, and with it the need to behave more cautiously.

The ECHO asked Liverpool if they think mask wearing should come back.

Angela Spicer said: "Yes without doubt they should be mandatory Its very little to ask to protect other people It might even save a life."

While Sandra Lancaster agreed that masks should make a return, she said: "Yes 100%. Cases on the rise again and more people to have the vaccine,

"I still wear mine why should us that do everything we can to stay safe have it spoilt by selfish people, spare a thought for our NHS and care workers once again it’s so hard and unfair on them.

We all want our family Christmas’s that we missed out on last year let’s get on top of this now."

Carol Bickers Trow believes: "They should never have stopped being mandatory."

Not everyone agrees that masks returning would be a good idea, with many believing it would be a step backwards and that masks aren't effective.

Kelly Worthington said: "No not at all. I will never judge anyone who wants to wear one but enough Is enough

"It's been nearly 2 years, most are double jabbed some even have had boosters, we need to move on now and get back to normal before more people suffer with mental health and financial issues."

Patricia Mairs said: "If it makes you feel better wearing a mask then wear a mask. Freedom of choice."
