Calls for calm in Craigneuk following rise in antisocial behaviour

Cops and councillors have appealed for calm in Craigneuk following a rise in antisocial behaviour over the past fortnight.

Officers are keen to avoid a rise in recent trouble and have increased patrols following flashpoints.

At 11.30pm on Monday, March 8, police responded to an ongoing disturbance on the street at Gateside Road, Craigneuk, involving a number of men allegedly armed with knives and metal poles.

Police attended and through investigation arrested three men aged 28, 32 and 29.

Police also arrested a 29-year-old man for the illegal use of a quad-bike on Gateside Road and his vehicle was seized.

Sgt James Mutter, from Wishaw Police Office, said: “Over the next few weeks there will be increased visibility by police in Craigneuk and those conducting themselves in an antisocial manner will be dealt with robustly.

“I would also appeal to the local community to report anyone they know who is carrying weapons and or illegally using off-road motor bikes/quads.

“If people don’t feel comfortable in giving their name by calling 101 then they can email LanarkshireLPST WishawandShotts@scotland.pnn.police.uk or contact Crimestoppers-uk.org anonymously on 0800 555111.”

Motherwell South East and Ravenscraig councillor Agnes Magowan issued her own plea for the trouble to stop.

The SNP elected member said: “I am aware that in the last year, due to the pandemic, that frustration has built up and needs an outlet.

“I implore young people not to resort to violence as more young people could be badly hurt or worse.

“I ask the community to work in partnership with the police who are trying to keep everyone from harm.

“If you are aware of unrest and think that a serious incident may arise please use the communication methods listed by Sergeant Mutter to prevent injuries.

“You can report them anonymously.

“Let’s work together to calm Craigneuk down and make it the usual safe and pleasant place to live.”

Labour councillor Kenneth Duffy has been left disappointed by the rise in trouble.

He added: “Sadly, the irresponsible actions of a minority are yet again giving our community a bad name.

“These selfish people have no respect for those living around them and cause great distress particularly to our elderly and vulnerable.

“I applaud the police efforts in tackling this issue and look forward to their increased visibility over the coming weeks to clamp down on this thoughtless behaviour.”
