Calls for BBC Match of the Day X host to be 'sacked' over offensive Liverpool remarks

People across Liverpool have called for a BBC presenter to be "sacked" over offensive comments he made about the city.

Match of the Day X host, Craig Mitch, has since apologised for the remarks he made online five years ago but a resurfaced YouTube video have provoked anger in Merseyside.

The derogatory comments included calling Liverpool a "s***hole" and saying that people here "don't know what a job is".

In a second video, he comments on the city again while discussing Steven Gerrard's move from the Reds to LA Galaxy.

Hundreds of ECHO readers have responded to the comments with many calling for Craig to be removed from the BBC show.

Craig Mitch made the comments on the YouTube show Filthy Fellas (Twitter)

On Facebook, May Daley Kuzmjak said: "He needs to be sacked. How dare he get away with it.

"The BBC needs to replace him. He’s offensive, out of line. Sack him."

Michelle Jones also said: "Absolutely disgraceful. I think the BBC should sack him.

"Do not comment on any place you know nothing about. How dare you!!

"Some people in Liverpool may not have a job but they have a lot of self respect, and have been through a lot through the years.

"Sack the scum!!"

Debi Garner added: "Should be sacked simple, why should he be allowed to insult the people of Liverpool and the place they call home."

Another ECHO reader made a tongue in cheek remark about their own job to get their point across.

Elise Blundell said: "Wow, such ignorance! Well just on my way home from my paid job in Liverpool (that I’ve been in for many years/decades),

"I could safely say that my employer would not be best pleased if I made outlandish comments like this and brought their company into disrepute.

"Just saying."

Others commented about how wrong the presenter was about Liverpool and slammed him for his comments.

Terry Hitchmough said: "You either get Liverpool or you don't, we have no problem with that, we know were not everyone's cup pf tea.

"But those that don't enjoy or understand Liverpool tend to be shallow unethical humourless type with deep heavy insecurities that spill out in mild bullying and putdowns on those not as fortunate.

"He seems to fit the bill like a glove"

Marianne Manson also said: "What they do have is a strong work ethic, integrity, charisma, strength, empathy, understanding, compassion and a cracking sense of humour.

"What do you have? An over inflated sense of self-worth and an entirely prejudiced set of opinions. How sad."

Craig's comments were made during a clip on YouTube show Filthy Fellas, in 2014.

He said: "I went to Liverpool and it's still a s***hole.

"I went there, people still haven't got jobs."

He also said: "Things haven't changed. They (Liverpool FC) couldn't get the job done against Arsenal . Why? Because they don't know what a job is."

And talking about Steven Gerard, he said: "He's going to a developed area. That's all it is," says the presenter.

"He's leaving a deprived area and going to a very developed area where there's sun and low crime rates."

Since the videos have resurfaced, Craig has apologised for his comments which many think is more than acceptable.

He tweeted: "There is a video of me making insensitive jokes about Liverpool from 5 years ago on twitter.

"This was clipped from an old episode of a YouTube show.

"I apologise for the offence these comments could cause and just know, these are not my actual views about a place I have a lot of respect for.

"Sometimes as football fans, we take banter too far. Back then, I did and I apologise for that."

Facebook user Andy Green said: "He was only a kid and yes he was probably old enough to know better but I'm not taking offence to it.

"Don't ruin the man's career for some stupid comments he made five years ago.

"We all know how great our city is and lets leave it there.

"Not to mention he has apologised for his comments aswell."
