Calls for Bathgate Procession and John Newland festival to change its 'racist' name

An online movement to change the name of the Bathgate Procession and John Newland Festival is gathering momentum.

'Bathgate Galaday' is part of the annual festival which takes place each year in West Lothian and features a street procession, costume characters, pipe band, live music, and entertainment.

Hundreds flock each year to enjoy a day out, however, some locals now question if the name of the festival is actually sending a 'racist' message.

Bathgate local, Allana Hoggard started an online petition to 'No longer use Bathgate Galaday to celebrate John Newland, slave and plantation owner.'

The movement has since gained hundreds of signatures with many saying they weren't aware of John Newland's racist past.

According to historical records, John Newland, who the procession celebrates, owned a plantation in Jamaica where black slaves were forced to work.

Allana Hoggard, who is a third-generation Bathgate local, felt the issue had to be highlighted after watching anti-racism protests in America.

She told Edinburgh Live she does not want the event cancelled but the name and focus of the celebration should be changed.

The petition is calling on West Lothian Council and the event Committee to change the name and focus of this event.

Bathgate Procession and John Newland Festival commented: "We are aware of the petition which has been created and the Procession committee are currently considering the request but are unable to provide any further comment at this time.

"Any updates on this matter will be posted on our Facebook page and website.

A council spokesperson said: “The council does not manage or operate local festivals, gala days or processions. They are community run events.”
