Callous thief steals collection tin for worker's dead son and makes off with £600 cash

A callous thief stole a collection tin for a woman's dead son from a Scots shop in broad daylight.

The grey-haired crook swiped the £600 funeral fund on Tuesday morning from the Usave shop on Dyke Road, Glasgow.

Horrified shop workers have since hit out at the "disgusting" behaviour and posted the footage online.

The collection had been launched for a woman who has worked there for 25 years after her son tragically died from a heart attack on July 9 this year aged 47 - just months after she'd also lost her husband.

Shop worker Pauline Chapman has worked alongside the woman for 10 years and decided to help out with funeral funds by starting a collection tin.

The close-knit employees have all been left devastated after the theft and can't believe someone would steal funds for a dead man's funeral.

The collection tin was also clearly labelled so workers believe the man knew exactly what he was stealing.

Pauline, 52, told the Record: 'It is the worst thing to do - it is disgusting.

"The lady has worked here for 25 years and I have worked with her for 10. She lost her husband in November and then her son died two weeks ago.

"The collection tin had £600 in it the last time I checked. It said on the front of the fund what it was for.

"The last time I seen the fund was 8.50am and then someone asked me to put £2 in it after 10am and it was gone.

"I didn't know it was him until we started looking through the camera and seen him filling his pockets.

"He was also helping himself to the freezer and chocolate.

"I think this is worse than stealing charity tin. It is just disgusting.

'The woman was devastated. I'm devastated for her - it's not the kind of money people just have lying around these days."

Police are currently probing the theft as enquiries into the incident remain ongoing.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Police received report of a theft from a premises on Dyke Road in Glasgow, which occurred around 9.30am on Tuesday, 20 July, 2021.

"Enquiries into the incident are ongoing.”
