Call to plant fruit trees in Glasgow's golf courses to reduce food poverty

A Glasgow resident is calling for fruit trees to be plants on Glasgow's golf courses and common areas to reduce food poverty in the city.

The person behind the idea took to Twitter to table the suggestion, in the belief that it would help deal address high rates of poverty in the city "in dignified ways".

They tweeted: "These wonderful plum and apple trees are self fertilising, they produce fruit between them four months of the year. If councils planted these in streets and commons it could reduce food poverty in dignified ways.

"27 golf courses in Glasgow and high rates of poverty, plant fruit trees."

The idea was met with positive responses, with one writing: "Great idea. I just don't understand why we don't grow fruit trees in common areas. It's common in many countries."

Another wrote: "And a great way to educate kids on loads of different subjects. We had blackberry bushes around my school and they were used in the early years 'life cycle' classes."
