Call to give residents at Short Strand interface 'peace' after homes attack

There has been a call to "let residents live in peace" at the Short Strand interface after homes were attacked with stones and golf balls.

It comes following reports of groups of youths from "outside the area" arranging fights at the interface over the past few months.

The PSNI received reports at 8.40pm last night that golf balls and stones had been thrown at houses in the Short Strand area from the direction of the Lower Newtownards Road.

The bonnet of one vehicle was reported to have been damaged by a golf ball.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers gathered a bag of golf balls and stones.

Sinn Fein representative for Short Strand, Mairead O Donnell, said that she had been made aware of the attacks, after a number of residents got in contact with her.

She said that "thankfully" not to much damage had been done to any properties and issued a call to let "residents live in peace".

She said: "Over the past few months there has been reports of small incidents taking place at the interface.

"I was made aware, after being contacted by residents, that homes were being hit with bricks and gold balls.

"I have been liaising with the PSNI on the matter and thankfully no serious damage was done.

"This comes as we have had reports of young people, mainly from outside the area, who have been arranging to meet up for fights at the interface. Although these have also not materialised into anything serious, but have caused a nuisance to local residents.

"I would just like to appeal to young people to let local residents live in peace. There are many families who do not need this trouble on their doorsteps."

A PSNI spokesperson said: "At around 8.40pm [on Tuesday night] police received reports that golf balls and stones had been thrown into the Short Strand area from the direction of the lower Newtownards Road.

"The bonnet of one vehicle was reported to have been damaged by a golf ball.

"Officers attended and retrieved a bag of stones and golf balls."
