Call to follow coronavirus guidelines as infection rate high in Westbury-on-Trym

People in Westbury-on-Trym are being urged not to be complacent after high reported rates of coronavirus in the area.

Councillor Steve Smith took to social media after receiving information from Bristol City Council's public health team.

He shared the following: "Bristol City Council is aware of local concerns about high reported rates of COVID-19 in the Westbury-on-Trym area.

"The rate of new cases of COVID-19 during the latest week of complete data (December 5 to 11) for the Westbury-on-Trym and Henleaze ward was 328 per 100,000, compared to the Bristol average of 117 per 100,000 for the same period.

"There were 65 confirmed cases of the virus in the ward over that seven day period.

"Two thirds of the cases reported in the ward were linked to care homes, including staff and residents.

"These were picked up through routine care home testing and are being contained and managed by the care homes and Public Health England.

"The rate of cases is not driven by transmission between individuals in the local community.

"We will continue to monitor this situation closely.

"While it is positive news that Bristol will move to Tier 2 (high) on Saturday (December 19), we must not be complacent and continue to follow the guidance to minimise risk of spread."

Three areas in our region are in the most severe category for coronavirus case rates.

One is in Bristol – Westbury-on-Trym – and the other two are in South Gloucestershire – Bradley Stoke North East and Bradley Stoke Central.

It comes as Bristol and North Somerset have dropped to "high alert" Tier 2, while South Gloucestershire remains in "very high alert" Tier 3.
