Call to block access to 'dangerous' Kirkstall Road viaduct after 15-year-old girl rescued from bridge

A frightening incident in which a missing 15-year-old girl had to be rescued from a Leeds viaduct has led to calls for access to the 'dangerous' bridge to be blocked.

Yesterday a 15-year-old girl was seen on the Kirkstall Road viaduct, sparking a huge emergency services response and causing the road to be closed in both directions. Thankfully, the girl was brought to safety.

She had been reported missing just minutes earlier with concerns for her welfare.

Now a Leeds woman has said it is too easy to climb onto the viaduct and has called for the council to take action to stop others from accessing it.

Commenting on LeedsLive's Facebook page, Monika Chan said: "I have climbed onto that viaduct myself in 2019 (not knowing it was in use and with some stupid friends at the time), We left right away but it does show how damn easy it is to climb onto it.

"The council need to block the hill to the RIGHT of the Viaduct, it has a bit that can easily be climbed and nothing to stop you, if someone here is a member of the council, Maybe try get that part of the bridge looked at and blocked."

She added: "PS, When I was there in 2019 we left within less than a minute, don't be stupid kids."

Another, Rob Taylor said: "Whenever the area is cordoned off it's usually for people being on that viaduct, something needs to be done about it - it's way too easily to access."
