Call The Midwife viewers 'crying buckets' after watching rollercoaster series finale

Call The Midwife viewers couldn't stop crying after the season finale ended on Sunday night.

Fans were in for a rollercoaster ride of an episode as they tearfully watched a heartbreaking car crash, a beautiful wedding and more.

Series 12's finale saw Matthew Aylward get married to Trixie Franklin in gorgeous wedding scenes.

However, a tragic death occurred in the episode as the expectant mother Lizzie passed away from her injuries sustained during a car crash.

The baby survived after Dr Turner and Shelagh fought to save its life.

Viewers were sobbing after the emotional episode and took to social media to share their thoughts.

"Wow. That episode of #CallTheMidwife was by far one of the best," one touched user said.

"It made me feel everything possible, as it always does. This show means everything to me, and I'm so grateful for the fact that I get to watch it when it's on."

Another added: "Is it even the #callthemidwife finale if I'm not balling my eyes out by 8:40? Such a tremendous show, always."

"Well done Call the Midwife, to continue to make me cry buckets on a Sunday evening. When you’re not on, it’s normally the thought of work the next day that does that!" one teary viewer commented.

"As usual, not a molecule of moisture left in my body," one said while another posted: "As always, a roller-coaster of emotion, a wonderful end to a great series."

"It's an incredible privilege to be able to look back on a decade of Call The Midwife, and yet know that our journey is still very far from over," said creator Heidi Thomas.

"We are thrilled to be going on for a few more years.

"Like Nonnatus House itself, we have a proud past but an even more exciting future – full of old favourites, fresh faces, higher hemlines, new ideas."

She added: "The stories we tell are like babies – they never stop coming, we love them all, and we vow to do our best by every single one."
