Call the Midwife star says Warren Beatty made her an 'indecent proposal'

Here’s some devilish gossip that would cause a stir at Nonnatus House. Call the Midwife star Miriam Margolyes has revealed how Warren Beatty once asked her: “Do you f***?”.

The actress, 80, who plays Mother Superior in the BBC drama, tells of the Hollywood lover’s upfront method of flirting in her memoir This Much Is True, out in September.

Beatty delivered the line while Margolyes, who is a lesbian, was auditioning for the 1981 film Reds when he was in his early forties and she was four years younger.

She said of writing the book: “I’m almost a virgin where writing is concerned but losing that virginity has been delicious.

“The past rears up; it both delights and frightens me. I’ve loved remembering and sharing; walking the tightrope between telling all and not hurting anyone.”

Her revelations include how she was conceived during an air-raid, posed nude as a teenager and features “cross-dressing” Leonardo DiCaprio, with whom she starred in the 1996 film Romeo and Juliet.

Publisher John Murray described the life story of the “nation’s naughtiest treasure” as an “extraordinary adventure”.

Margolyes won the BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress for the 1993 film The Age of Innocence, and received an OBE in 2002.

She was later cast as Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter film series.

But Margolyes recently sparked controversy when asked on The Last Leg Locked Down Under how she thought the Government had been dealing with the pandemic.

She admitted she wanted PM Boris Johnson to “die” of Covid, before backtracking but adding: “We’re in the s***, basically.”

As for how she reacted to the bold Mr Beatty, she seems a woman not afraid to speak her mind... even in a wimple.
