Call The Midwife star hints filming for Christmas special could finally begin after Covid-19 delay

Call The Midwife star Stephen McGann has some big news about a Christmas special episode - and fans are bound to be happy.

The actor, who plays Dr Turner on the hit BBC drama, hinted filming could finally be going ahead soon, but no date had yet been set.

The actor, who is married to show writer and creator Heidi Thomas, revealed the episode had already been written and was "done". But he said his wife was keeping details under wraps, reports MirrorOnline.

Filming schedules had been halted because of the coronavirus, but the actor told ITV's This Morning that all things were being assessed.

He explained : "What I can say is by the looks of things, it's coming very, very soon. I can't give you the official word as of yet, but the great thing about Christmas is that Christmas has been written.

"Why do I know? Cos I live with the boss who writes it."

Stephen added: "Christmas is done, apparently it's fantastic. It's going to be in Poplar, it's not going to be overseas, and it has a very, very special theme which I can't go into, but I can tell you now it should be extraordinary."

He confirmed it wouldn't be long before the cast and crew were back together again, but agreed changes may need to be made to follow new guidelines.

He said: "I had a word with the producer this week, and she told me every show is different. Of course if you think about Call The Midwife, we have not just different ages of crew but also young children.

"We want to make sure we do everything absolutely right for the way we film Call The Midwife, and all those processes I've been assured are going on already, they're already in pre-production for it.

"As soon as all those things are in place which is very soon I hope, we'll be able to make an announcement and we should be back."

Call The Midwife returns later in the year with its Christmas special.
