Call The Midwife star Stephen McGann's wife in tears over BBC drama's plots

Stephen McGann has revealed he's found wife Heidi Thomas in tears over storylines on Call; The Midwife, the hit BBC drama she writes and produces.

Speaking earlier this year, former Emmerdale actor Stephen said he had fallen 'madly in love,' with Heidi, when the two met in the 1980s, before a reunion decades later finally brought them together. The 59-year-old plays Doctor Turner in the much loved Sunday night series, while his on-screen alias at the centre of some often, very emotional, scenes.

At the end of the last series, which wrapped up on BBC1 earlier this year, Dr Turner's fate hung in the balance as she and Sister Julienne, played by Jenny Agutter, were involved in a horrifying train crash outside Poplar. Call The Midwife fans had to wait a whole week to see if they survived, with the cast under strict instruction not to let slip any spoilers.

Thankfully they did and both Stephen and Jenny have been back in front of the camera to film the next series, which will include the now annual Call The Midwife Christmas episode.

The Express reports that Stephen recently joined other half Heidi and Call The Midwife's executive producer Pippa Harris for the BFI and Radio Times Television Festival, when Pippa admitted she's often cried at the scripts Heidi has sent her. And it was then that Stephen interjected to reveal that he'd walked in on Heidi shedding a tear at upcoming storylines.

He commented: "Ladies and gentlemen, I go into this woman at one o'clock in the morning. And sometimes she is crying at something she has just written, and I'm like 'what's wrong?' and she'll just cry!"

As credits rolled on the final episode of Call The Midwife's last run, Stephen took to Twitter to open up on why the scenes involving teenage mum Carol losing her baby after going into premature labour really hit a raw nerve with him, sharing a personal tragedy from his family's past.

HEeposted: "The former Emmerdale actor wrote: "Some personal context to tonight's #CallTheMidwife ep. I've been in a deadly disaster myself. It's cruel, but ordinary in its cruel lottery. Absolutely part of life.

"Also, my mum lost twins like Carol. My brothers. They were placed in a coffin with a stranger."
