Call the Midwife's Jenny Agutter opens up on 'difficulties' filming BBC show during pandemic

Call the Midwife star Jenny Agutter has opened up on the "difficulties" they experienced filming the hit BBC TV show during the pandemic.

Jenny, 68, has been playing Sister Julienne in the period drama series - which is based on a group of midwives in the East End of London - since it first aired almost a decade ago in January 2012.

The highly-acclaimed TV show is set to return for it's annual festive special on Christmas Day.

Jenny spoke during her interview on Loose Women of how it was a "delight" to be back working with the Call the Midwife crew and cast.

But she did admit that filming with Covid-19 restrictions in place made it "extra hard work".

"I think the fact that one was able to be working at all, really made the difficulties easier," she explained: "It wasn't easy. I think we got much much better at the fact that we were distancing and wearing masks.

"You know it's hard to receive a baby from six foot away, but we found ways around it, you know mothers were always there with their children.

"And I think that one got to a point where, it's important that the audience don't feel that because ones in a period of time where that community had to be very close.

"So it was just extra hard work, but just a delight to be working with that crew and working with the cast and the production and everything. I mean 10 years! goodness me! talking about time, it's been a long time on that."

Fans of the BBC show will be transported once again to the 1960s later this month, when the Christmas special airs.

Nurse Lucille Anderson and Cyril Robinson are set to tie the knot and Nonnatus House is set to be busier than ever with more babies on the way.

The Call the Midwife Christmas special will air on BBC One this Christmas Day from 8pm, with the new eleventh series starting on January 2.

Loose Women airs weekdays on ITV from 12.30pm.
