The BBC’s popular show Call the Midwife is back again this year with a Christmas special, ahead of its upcoming new series.

In recent years, Call the Midwife’s Christmas episodes have been a highlight of the festive season for fans, and this year promises to be no exception.

The midwifery drama will have some familiar faces as well as a special appearance from a much-loved character who has taken a break from the show - spoilers below!

When is the Call the Midwife Christmas special on TV?

The Christmas special of Call the Midwife will air on Christmas Day, December 25 on BBC One at 8pm - and if you’re a fan you can look forward to a much-anticipated appearance from a long-missed cast member.

The Call the Midwife Christmas special episode will be followed by the show's eleventh series in 2022.

Who is in the Call the Midwife Christmas special cast?

You can expect all the series regulars to return in this Christmas special, including Leonie Elliott (Lucille Anderson), Stephen McGann (Doctor Patrick Turner), Helen George (Trixie Franklin) and Jenny Agutter (Sister Julienne).

There will also be a comeback for another familiar face, as Miriam Margolyes will be returning as Sister Mildred in the special.

Fans will know this follows a hiatus in season 10, with Miriam taking a break from the show after COVID-19 travel restrictions prevented her from getting back to the UK for filming.

What is the plot of the Call the Midwife Christmas special?

The Call the Midwife Christmas special is set in December 1966 and sees Lucille (Leonie Elliott) and Cyril (Zephryn Taitte) preparing for their winter wedding.

At the same time, the staff at Nonnatus House are having their busiest Christmas Day ever, with the Maternity Home being filled with several pregnant mothers with challenging cases.

However, Mother Mildred is back to support the team throughout this time, in what promises to be another Christmas treat for Call the Midwife fans.
