One of the best Call of Duty games in years is now free.
Sony and Activision partnered up to release the game for free to all PlayStation Plus subscribers today. It’s free from now until July 6th, so you have a long time to download the game.
If you have a PS4 but not a PlayStation Plus subscription, wait until June 3rd when Sony’s Days of Play sale begins. You can snag (or renew) a subscription with a hefty discount.
The base game includes a campaign, a Zombies mode and multiplayer. Multiplayer includes one of my favorite Call of Duty modes ever: War Mode. It’s an objective-based mode that I wish every Call of Duty had, pitting teams against one another over several objectives, like capturing a bridge, then destroying an ammo depot, then guiding a tank and so forth. One team attacks while the other defends and then you switch sides. For this alone, I recommend the game. But the campaign and normal MP are also very fun.
Unfortunately, WWII followed the DLC model that’s plagued the series up until last year’s Modern Warfare. This means you’ll need to buy the extra map packs if you want to experience everything the game has to offer. Modern Warfare releases all new maps for free. WWII also has a system of loot boxes that you can pretty much just ignore if you want to. You’ll earn some just by playing in any case.
You can download the game for free on the PlayStation Store. I definitely recommend it.
I have a sneaking suspicion that this release is purposefully timed with an incoming Call of Duty 2020 announcement. Look for that soon. It’s almost certainly going to be Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, possibly set in Vietnam.
