Call of Duty is finally bringing back its extraction mode DMZ—but not in Black Ops 7

Before there was ARC Raiders, Call of Duty had its own extraction mode based in Warzone during the year of Modern Warfare II. It was called DMZ, and for fans who loved it, they really loved it.

Much to the shock of everybody, CoD announced today that DMZ will be returning to the franchise, but it won't be coming in Black Ops 7 to complement its multiplayer, Zombies, or Endgame campaign offerings. It's coming to Call of Duty: Mobile.

What, you guys don't have phones?

CoD: Mobile's variant is called DMZ: Recon, and while gamers will likely roll their eyes that it's coming to the iOS and Android version of CoD, it may still yet be worth taking a look at, especially for those who may have recently

DMZ launched in 2022 alongside MWII and took place on that game's Warzone map, Al Mazrah. While not as fleshed out or story-focused as a game like ARC Raiders or Escape From Tarkov, it was an introduction into the extraction mode for many players. It featured PvPvE, difficult AI enemies, lots of loot to scavenge, and of course, you would lose it all if you died.

To be honest, CoD: Mobile is an entirely different world out of my realm of expertise. I've been covering CoD for over 10 years now, but I'm not a mobile gamer, and so it's never appealed to me. But it does have a pretty consistent userbase for it to keep getting content all these years. And DMZ being added now, when extraction modes are quickly becoming all the rage, makes sense.

I wasn't the biggest fan of DMZ back then, either, but I feel like I have a better understanding of the game mode now after getting lost in ARC Raiders over the past few weeks. If CoD can enhance and remaster DMZ in a new version of the game in a more fleshed out experience, it could be the big similar to how Warzone took over the BR genre in 2020.

But gamers looking to play a CoD extraction mode will likely need their phones for now, at least until next year. Rumors point towards CoD 2026 being Modern Warfare 4 with Infinity Ward at the helm, and the return of DMZ in that game seems likely.
