Call of Duty down: Servers crash leaving gamers unable to connect worldwide

Call of Duty crashed for gamers around the world after the servers went down earlier today.

Reports of problems spiked at around 6pm UK time, according to website Downdetector.com

It is believed the down time was due to the roll-out of a new patch 1.09 patch for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

The patch was released across all platforms, including PCs and gaming consoles.

The game's creator- Infinity Ward - wrote on Twitter earlier: "Patch Update 1.09 for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is starting to roll out shortly."

The downtime is believed to be due to the release of a new patch for the game (PA)

Users took to social media to express their frustration that the title was temporarily unavailable.

One user wrote: "Estimated wait time 3 minutes and 37 seconds and not counting down."

Another said: "Having them download overnight or right before you start playing was fine. Now we have to stop in the middle of playing"

Last month it was reported that SAS troops play Call of Duty at least four hours a day to hone their skills for combat.

The members of crack unit use the game as part of their war preparations as it simulates ambushes, house clearances and other scenarios.

"Video games are now incredibly realistic and pretty much accurately reflect what modern combat is like," an insider said.

Call of Duty, which can be played on versions of PlayStations and Xboxs, is part of the troop's "warming up and warming down exercises".
