Armie Hammer and Timothée Chalamet have signed on to star in the upcoming sequel to the hit independent film Call Me by Your Name.
Released in 2017, Call Me by Your Name told the story of a love affair between 17-year-old Elio (Chalamet) and his father’s research assistant Oliver (Hammer).
Directed by Luca Guadagnino, the film was based on a novel of the same name by André Aciman.
In an interview with La Republica, the filmmaker confirmed that the cast from the original film would be reprising their acclaimed roles.
“It is a great pleasure to work with Timothée Chalamet, Armie Hammer, Michael Stuhlbarg, Esther Garrel and the other actors,” he said. ”Everyone will be in the new movie.”
While it is still unclear whether the plot of the as-yet-unnamed sequel will be based on Aciman’s own 2019 sequel Find Me, Guadagnino has previously hinted that he will be returning to Aciman’s first book for inspiration.
“The novel has 40 pages at the end that goes through the next 20 years of the lives of Elio and Oliver,” he revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “So there is some sort of indication through the intention of author André Aciman that the story can continue.”
Call Me by Your Name, which also starred Stuhlbarg and Casar, is now often cited as a significant piece of mainstream queer cinema.
