Call for 'safe word' scheme for children after Arthur Labinjo-Hughes tragedy

A mum is calling for a 'safe word' scheme to help protect children after the tragic death of Arthur Labinjo-Hughes.

A petition has been launched urging schools, nurseries, supermarkets and community spaces to back the project.

Organiser Kari-Louise Holloway believes it could mirror Ask for Angela, where people who feel unsafe, vulnerable or threatened in clubs and bars can refer to Angela to discreetly seek help.

She told Birmingham Live that using a simple word would allow children to let teachers, family members and members of the public know if they have been hurt.

The mum-of-two, 45, said: "I think it could make a difference to children who are scared.

"It's scary words for them to say 'somebody is abusing me' but my idea was something like 'star star' could be promoted to schools.

"A service like Childline can be scary for younger children. A lot of younger children don't even know how to use the phone, but if they saw somebody that they knew or maybe supermarket staff they could say the safe word to alert them that there's a problem."

The murder of six-year-old Arthur sparked a nationwide outpouring of grief after a court heard he was routinely beaten, isolated, starved, force-fed salt-laced meals and made to stand for up to 14 hours a day.

His stepmother Emma Tustin, 32, was jailed for at least 29 years for murder, while his father Thomas Hughes, 29, was sentenced to 21 years for manslaughter.

Kari-Louise, from Shirley, Solihull, said: "When we heard that awful recording of Arthur crying it absolutely broke me and I wanted to do something that could make a difference. I just want action to stop this from happening again.

"After reading about that case I hold my kids really tight every night and I have cried about it a lot. It happened in the local area where I grew up so it has really resonated with me.

"Thank you to anyone that does support it, and hopefully together, we can try to save more children. If we can save as many children as possible with this initiative I will be happy, even if it just saves one."
