Call for review of 'unduly lenient' five-year jail term for pensioner who strangled wife to death

Calls have been made for a review of the sentence of a man who strangled his wife five days into the first coronavirus lockdown.

Anthony Williams was sentenced to five years in jail at Swansea crown court on Thursday. The 70-year-old was cleared of murder following a trial but pleaded guilty to manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility after strangling Ruth Williams, 67, at their home in Cwmbran, on March 28 last year.

On Friday, February 19, Labour MP Harriet Harman said she would write to the Attorney General for England and Wales, Suella Braverman, over the sentence.

Writing on Twitter, Ms Harman said: "I have today referred the five year sentence of Anthony Williams for killing his wife Ruth Williams to the Attorney General Suella Braverman asking for her to refer it for review as an Unduly Lenient Sentence."

Ruth Williams was found slumped in the porch of the couple's Brynglas home with a pair of keys in her hand. She was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead.

A pathologist found Mrs Williams died from pressure to the neck and had also suffered neck fractures.

In interviews read to the jury, Williams agreed with detectives that he was responsible for the killing of his wife of 46 years, telling them he "snapped" while in bed.

Williams was cleared of murder by a jury, with trial judge Paul Thomas saying that in his view Williams' mental state was "severely affected at the time".

A psychologist argued that Williams' depression and anxiety "was heightened" at the time of the attack, which "substantially" impaired his ability to exercise self-control.
