Call for council to clean drain and gullies after flooding across Wishaw area

A torrential downpour caused chaos on roads in and around Wishaw last week.

And now calls have been made for the council to properly clear gullies and drains to prevent it from happening again.

Among the worst areas affected was the Braedale area of Newmains with the streets submerged in water.

Local independent councillor Robert McKendrick said: “I have been contacted by a number of residents about the problems in and around Braedale Place.

“I have been in contact with the council over the last couple of days to get the drains sorted.

“I have also been contacted by residents in other areas of Newmains with a similar problem.

“This is a North Lanarkshire-wide problem but we know the drains are not getting cleaned enough and that is simply not good enough.”

The downpour also caused disruption around University Hospital Wishaw with surface water causing chaos for drivers.

Locals in Coltness also reported several problems with Kenilworth Avenue, Ryde Lane and the area around Calderbridge Primary particularly affected.

Coltness Community Council chairman John Carr said: “We have raised the issue about cleaning the gullies around this area several times.

“We had issues in the winter due to the melting snow and the roads were covered with water. There is grass and saplings growing out of them. The pipes are all blocked.

“This is due to council cost cutting but it will backfire on them big time.

“I even saw a car being stuck just outside Wishaw hospital. People were turning back because the water.”

A council spokeswoman said: “The council carries out a regular programme of roadside gully cleaning, as well as specific cleaning and repairs when required. Despite this, in some locations last week, the flow of water into the sewers was restricted due to the build-up of silt and debris in the gullies.

“Where this happened, we carried out work promptly to clear the gullies and flooding. Where necessary, further investigation work will be carried out on specific issues.”
