Call for audit of Newcastle East asbestos project

Ongoing: A section of the roof replacement at Newcastle East Public School.

Newcastle East Public School parents are calling for an independent audit of how asbestos was removed from the school's heritage building over the Christmas break.

It follows dissatisfaction with information provided by the Department of Education on Wednesday night about the project, the clean-up process and the level of ongoing risk.

The department released a 10-page document containing responses to more than 50 questions following a meeting between Education Minister Sarah Mitchell, education officials and furious parents on Monday.

Despite the large number of responses, several parents said they felt the document had glossed over - or not addressed - key concerns.

In relation to the impact of potential historical exposure, the department advised that it had appropriate insurance arrangements in place for current and former staff and students.

"If you are concerned about your health we recommend you consult your doctor," the department said.

It also suggested anyone who was concerned about past exposure register with the federal government's National Asbestos Exposure Register.

Parent Kath Fielden said key information about the contamination crisis was missing, including the results of the 215 composite swab tests that the department relied on to show the school was safe.

"Why haven't they released any of the test results for the period from December 2, 2019 to January 16. Was any testing actually done in this period," she said.

She was among several parents who said they wanted further assurance about the accuracy of the technical information they had been given.

"At the moment I'm not happy," said a parent who did not wish to be named.

"I think there should be an independent audit by a contaminated land management accredited site auditor backed by a environmental health risk assessor with full transparency of documents, photos and records of the works provided to the auditor."

Ms Fielden also challenged the department's advice about washing potentially contaminated school clothes to reduce the risk of exposure.

"All the peer-reviewed scientific articles advise not to wash contaminated clothing because it makes the asbestos airborne and spreads the particles throughout the surrounding environment," she said.

School council president Lisa Piefke said she remained concerned about the potential historical exposure from Super 6 asbestos sheeting found during the roof removal process.

"That is still a big hole in the story they have been telling us," she said.

She said the school community would ensure the department made good on its promise to provide further documentation and follow-up with the clean-up of all remaining asbestos at the school.

In a cover letter to the department's responses, education department secretary Mark Scott reiterated an apology by the minister at Monday's meeting.

He said the department had been focused on ensuring the school could be reopened at the start of the school year.

"We acknowledge that we have not met the school community's expectations and in not communicating with you sooner, we have caused undue stress and concern, for this we apologise," he said.
