Call for assurances over derelict West Lothian nursery

Armadale councillor, Stuart Borrowman, wants assurances that something will be done about the derelict nursery building in the town.
The call comes as the Scottish Government dismissed an appeal against a decision by West Lothian Council to refuse demolition of a listed building.
Lucas Land proposed to clear the Academy Street site and replace the single storey 1870s school- dubbed Armadale’s Disgrace - with a block of flats.
The demolition has been supported by the town’s community council.

The building has disintegrated since it was sold off by the council in 2004.

Several planning applications to convert it have come to nothing.
The town is sharply divided over the future of the building.

While some think it should be saved and incorporated into a new building, others see it as a vermin- infested risk to life and limb.
Comments reflected this when Councillor Borrowman posted the update on social media.
He acknowledged the Holyrood decision “will please many and disappoint some but it puts the ball back in the court of the owner and the council as to how to proceed.”

That was the question he put to planning officers at the July meeting of the Development Management Committee when he sought assurances that some kind of plan for the future of the building be formulated within six months of the result of the appeal being known.
This was an assurance he first sought when the council dismissed the request to demolish the building.
“I really do want to see some form of progress,” he told the meeting.
Officers said they planned to meet the building’s owners in the near future to look for a solution.
