Call for 20mph zone after car flips onto roof in Merseyside village

Several awful crashes have prompted one resident to ask for a 20mph zone in his village.

Paul Sibbald, who lives on Bolton Road in Port Sunlight, Wirral, said that between October and December last year he had seen two cars end up in the middle of a small roundabout on the road, while another crashed into a pillar box.

Speaking at last night’s meeting of Wirral Council’s environment and transport committee, Mr Sibbald said another vehicle ended up on its roof after mounting the pavement.

Given the number of accidents, and the “noticeable” increase in speeding and “anti-social driving” he had seen, Mr Sibbald asked the committee if a 20mph zone for Port Sunlight was being considered.

The Bolton Road resident also asked if chevron signs which were unfit for purpose would be replaced, as the council had promised him they would be two years ago.

Cllr Liz Grey, chair of the committee, said road safety was one of her main priorities and she takes Mr Sibbald’s concerns seriously.

The Labour councillor added that his contribution will be taken on board in the ongoing road safety working group and he will get a full answer to his questions.

As for the delay on new road signs, Cllr Grey said she would need to consult with the relevant officer to understand why the work had not been completed.

Cllr Jo Bird, who represents Bromborough for Labour, said cars move fast but progress on this issue seemed to be “glacial”.

In response, Cllr Grey said she did not want to provide a more detailed answer to Mr Sibbald’s question as the issue was being discussed by the working group and any answer given could be out of date.

However, Cllr Irene Williams, who represents the same ward as Cllr Bird for Labour, was able to end the discussion on a more positive note.

She said a council officer has told her that new signs have been ordered for the roundabout Mr Sibbald mentioned.
