Californians urged to wear masks indoors as Covid cases double

  • California is experiencing a late summer Covid-19 wave, with public health officials reporting a continued increase in new cases across the state.
  • Positive test results for coronavirus more than doubled in late August compared to the comparative week in July, reaching 12.07 per cent statewide by 23 August.
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that infections are growing or likely growing in 30 US states, including California, partly due to increased socialising and the return to school.
  • Some county health officials are recommending a return to indoor mask wearing amid the rise in cases.
  • Despite the surge, hospitalization rates remain low in the state.
