California wildfires: Timelapse video shows smoke pouring over Clear Lake

Images of smoke rising from a wildfire have been captured in a time-lapse video taken in Clear Lake, California.

The wind-driven Pawness Fire has so far destroyed more than 20 buildings in the area and has threatened to spread further.

It broke out on Saturday, 23 June, near Clearlake Oaks. The footage was taken on Sunday, 24 June.

Authorities have ordered 3,000 Spring Valley residents to evacuate their homes for safety.

The fire raced across dry bush in northern California, as officials have said unusually warm weather, high winds and highly flammable vegetation turned brittle by drought, have all fuelled the flames.

Officials said 230 firefighters were battling the Lake County fire, but the area made it difficult to get equipment close to the flames.

The governor of California, Jerry Brown, has declared a state of emergency in Lake County, where the biggest fire was raging about 120 miles north of San Francisco.
