California fires latest: Evacuations as fresh wildfires roar overnight

A fresh spate of California wildfires were roaring overnight.

Some 7,500 people in Ventura County, north of Los Angeles, were ordered to flee as a blaze spread on South Mountain, near the city of Santa Paula.

Hundreds of firefighters aided by helicopters and bulldozers fought the flames.

About 100 miles away, a fire swept down the slopes of a forest above San Bernardino, devouring 200 acres of scrub and damaging at least six homes before firefighters got it under control.

Another blaze in Jurupa Valley, east of LA, was caused when a police chase ended with a car crash that sparked a fire in a field and spread to 300 acres.

Fierce winds that have driven the blazes began to subside last night, and forecasters have predicted a week of calm conditions.

A 30-mile long wildfire was today spreading across Brazil’s Pantanal wetlands.

The local governor said it was one of the biggest in the region.
