Three people have been killed and nine others injured in a shooting at a Halloween party in California.

The emergency services confirmed three fatalities and nine patients had been transported to local area hospitals following the incident in Long Beach.

Long Beach Fire Department tweeted: At 10:44 pm, @lbfirefighters responded to shooting at a residence on the 2700 block of 7th Street.

"An MCI was declared with a total of 12 patients. 3 confirmed fatalities (adult males) 9 patients transported to local area hospitals. 5 immediate & 4 delayed. PIO onscene."

Jake Heflin with the LBFD told the Los Angeles Times the shooting took place at a Halloween party, and all patients transported may have been hit by gunfire.

He said most of the dead and injured were in their mid 20s.

Mr Heflin added that the suspects remain at large, although the exact number of suspects involved was not clear and a description was not available.

Long Beach police spokeswoman Jennifer De Prez told the Times officers found victims inside and outside of the home.

She said it is unknown if the gunman or gunmen fled on foot or in a vehicle.

It is also unclear how many people were at the home at the time of the shooting.

Some residents said they heard up to 20 shots, according to the Times.

Oswaldo Morales, 47, said he was in the area when he heard what sounded several rounds of gunfire, adding that it sounded like 17 shots.

He said: "Then silence, you didn’t hear a thing."

Footage from the incident shows a large crime scene next to a home-based nail salon as paramedics treat the victims.
