California plane crash: One injured as F-16 fighter jet SMASHES into warehouse

One person has been left seriously injured after a fighter jet smashed into a warehouse on a routine training exercise, according to reports.

The pilot managed to safely eject from the F-16 plane before it crashed into the building in southern California yesterday.

The jet started a small fire in the building and at least one person had to be taken to hospital, reports claim.

A photo of the accident scene posted on local television station KCAL-TV showed a gaping hole in the roof of a large grey building.

The warplane went down at about 3.30pm [10.30pm GMT] and slammed into a warehouse at the end of the runway at March Air Reserve Base, according to spokesman Major Perry Covington.

NBC Los Angeles reports that one person, an employee of a company that operates in the warehouse, has been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The jet was carrying weapons at the time of the crash, according to NBC.

The sprawling base, located in Riverside County, California, about 65 miles (105 km) east of Los Angeles, is home to the Air Force Reserve 452nd Air Mobility Wing.

There are normally between 2,000 and 6,000 Air Force reservists and other personnel on base at any given time, Covington said.

A section of Interstate 215, a major north-south route running through the base, was closed in both directions after the crash, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

The CHP urged motorists to avoid the area.

The cause of the crash is not yet known.
