California: June Lake winter fest Feb. 21

Feb. 12--June Lake is looking to regain its winter mojo, and that starts with decent snow. Thankfully, the fetching little alpine town just north of Mammoth Lakes got a 10-inch blast during the recent storm. The fresh coating comes just in time for the town's Winter Festival Feb. 21.

The Winter Festival, canceled last year for lack of snow, runs 11 a.m. to early evening on Gull Lake, walking distance from the center of town. Among the activities are a winter triathlon, snow sculpture contests, fat bike demos, cross-country skiing and a laser rifle range. Live music, food, game booths and a bonfire will round out the day.

June Lake and its family-oriented ski mountain should be on the radar of any young family looking to escape the bustle of Mammoth, in a tiny village ringed by four lakes. Five hours from L.A., it offers skiing, sledding and a mountain-town authenticity that's becoming increasingly difficult to find.

Among the attractions around town are the Tiger Bar and Cafe, a family friendly tavern that is the main drag's prime pit stop. Shops, galleries and the day spa at Double Eagle Resort are other options for weekend visitors. Be sure to stop for a pint at June Lake Brewing, the recently opened craft beer outpost near the center of the village.
