California Gov. Newsom to face recall election Sept. 14

California Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis on Thursday set Sept. 14 for Gov. Gavin Newsom recall election.

Why it matters: The election will be only the second time in the state's history that a gubernatorial recall campaign has succeeded in getting on the ballot.

The big picture: Calls for Newsom's ouster picked up after he was photographed at a dinner with a dozen people in Napa County as coronavirus cases surged and the state government restricted social gatherings.

Of note: California's constitution requires the lieutenant governor to declare a recall election after the secretary of state certifies the recall.
