Caledonian MacBrayne turn away 66 travel parties attempting to visit islands during lockdown

People are continuing to risk lives by bidding to self-isolate in second home hotspots.

Caledonian MacBrayne turned away 66 travel parties last week, with many being carloads of folk trying to board ferries in Oban without a legitimate reason.

And as a leisure craft, from outside the area, was seen sailing around Oban on Thursday, calls are growing for police to target offenders travelling by land and sea.

With a bright surfboard tied to its deckrail, there was shock as the yacht, named Just Because, sailed out of the tourist town.

Oban councillor Roddy McCuish said: “I can’t get over how many selfish people there are.

"Local people are doing their best but visitors are still threatening our NHS, threatening our food supplies.

People are trying to get on our ferries for non-essential travel, probably just to visit holiday homes to self-isolate themselves up here. It’s incredible foolish and selfish.”

The RNLI urged people to stay off the water, while a CalMac spokesman confirmed: “Only essential travellers are currently being allowed to board.”
