Caledonian Braves talk player contract concerns amid shut down

Caledonian Braves managing director and founder Chris Ewing says the club have been left in the dark about their own players by Scottish football supremos.

The Lowland League campaign has been brought to a halt as the SFA and SPFL joint response group called off every game in the country last weekend amid COVID-19 concerns.

The Alliance Park side are connected to the Edusport Academy, which recruits from France, and Ewing states the club have “suspended our traditional method of recruitment in France and will look at alternatives and adapt appropriately.”

He admits the club are “likely to be impacted financially” but says they are yet to hear from anyone in the governing body regarding contracts of players and support for wages.

The chief said: “With regards to the Braves, we don’t necessarily rely on gate receipts due to the unique nature of our club, though players and staff will need to be paid.

“As of now, we have had no guidance from the SFA, PFA’s or the league with regards to wages or contract in the event of a suspension.

“Regardless, we will make sure our players and staff are cared for.”

Ewing added: “Ideally, things will return to normal in a few weeks and the league can be played to completion.

“It would be extremely disappointing for everyone should that not be the case, though I think we all agree that human health and safety trump football and it is now important that we, as a society pull together, follow the guidance and protocol that will allow us to return to normality as soon as possible.”
