Caleb Clarke breaks down in tears during live TV interview following stunning performance just hours after grandfather's death

This is the emotional moment rising New Zealand rugby star Caleb Clarke broke down in tears after putting in a man of the match performance just hours after his grandfather had passed away.

The 21-year-old starred in the Auckland Blues' 27-24 victory over the Highlanders at Eden Park, scoring a try and setting up another for Reiko Ioane with a searing break.

However, he revealed after the match that it was touch and go whether he was even going to feature in the Super Rugby Aotearoa clash at all.

Speaking to Sky Sports New Zealand as he picked up his man of the match award, he broke down in tears as he dedicated the performance to his late grandfather.

"It was a big day losing my grandfather just hours before kick-off," he said.

"It was a bit hard and a bit iffy if I was going to play. But I know he would want him to play and I dedicated that game to him.

"I just want to give all the honour and glory back to God. That was dedicated for you grandad."

The New Zealand Sevens product had already shown his emotion before kick-off, breaking down during a minute's silence for police officer and Blues fan Matthew Hunt who was shot and killed in Auckland last week.

And after he scored his try early on in the match, he also pointed to the sky in tribute to his grandfather.

Clarke has been tipped by many as a future All Black, with his performances in Super Rugby Aotearoa catching the eye.
