Calday Grange 2 Cardinal Heenan 1: Wirral School makes history to land Liverpool Echo Cup for first time

Calday Grange Grammar School made history by winning the Liverpool Echo Cup for the first time at Liverpool FC's Academy.

The Wirral School won the 67th Echo Cup final beating eight time winners Cardinal Heenan of West Derby 2-1 - and in doing so etched their name onto the historic trophy for the first time.

Famous Mersey footballing names like Ross Barkley, Jack Rodwell, Gary Ablett, Sammy Lee, Chris Lawler, Mick Lyons and David Johnson have all graced the final of the Under-14 competition.

But this year it was Calday captain Toby Jones' chance to raise the trophy aloft at the culmination of a thrilling final.

The Wirral side struck first,  Joel Jones ending a polished Calday move by clipping a neat left-footed finish from 20 yards past the Cardinal Heenan keeper.

But that merely stung the West Derby side into life. Ollie Hawksworth made a breathtaking fingertip save to keep Calday's lead intact - the first act of a superb individual display - and a close range header flew narrowly wide before some uncharacteristic defensive indecision allowed Alex McDonald to knock in the equaliser before half-time.

The goal had been coming - but Calday regrouped at half-time and as rain poured down on the first Echo Cup final to be staged in June they started to create chances again.

The winner came from a fine set piece routine, Toby Jones heading down from a beautifully delivered corner and Thomas Davies making the sweetest of left-foot connections to fire crisply into the corner of the Cardinal Heenan net.

Calday had further opportunities to wrap up the match, but remained indebted to keeper Ollie Hawksworth who made one superb close range tip over and then made a decisive punch from a packed penalty area as the wet ball became increasingly difficult to collect.

With players succumbing to the affects of cramp on a big pitch the Wirral side dug in to claim their historic prize.

The first Echo Cup final was staged in 1952, and Calday's name will now grace the base for the first time.
